The Healing Foundation’s Stolen Generations Resource Kit for Teachers and Students has been created to educate young people about the Stolen Generations. It makes it easy for school communities to start the conversation and inform classroom discussions using facts, real examples and stories.
This teaching resource, first launched in 2019, was developed to introduce students to the firsthand experiences of Stolen Generations survivors. While the policies and suffering of the Stolen Generations is only one part of the ongoing story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, it is an essential one to learn and to teach so students have a full understanding of the history of Australia.
In 2023 an expanded version of the kit has been launched, providing Australian Curriculum version 9 aligned lesson plans for Foundation to Year 12 classrooms. We’ve also developed a range of new resources, including Plug-n-play PowerPoints and an Educator Guide to support the implementation of these activities in classrooms.
Cultural consultation and guidance from Stolen Generations survivors has been an essential part of this project, with their stories an important part of this resource. The Healing Foundation has worked closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous teachers, parents, early childhood specialists and curriculum writers in the creation of the kit.
