Friends of Merri Creek is a group that works together to protect Merri Creek. Regular creek-side activities are organised. Activities include planting and site maintenance, bird surveys, water quality testing, and litter blitzes.

A range of creatures call the Merri Creek corridor home – from blue banded bees, to water rats to rock wallabies. Much of the work that Friends of Merri Creek conduct is about supporting the biodiversity that will allow these populations to survive and grow including two endangered species – the Golden Sun Moth and the Growling Grass Frog.

The primary purpose of the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC) is to ensure the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, and the ecologically sensitive restoration, development and maintenance of the Merri Creek and tributaries, their corridors and associated ecological communities.

In order to achieve its primary purpose, MCMC:
- consults, co-ordinates, informs, advises and provides a forum for member organisations and other stakeholders
- participates in strategic and statutory planning and development assessment processes
- advocates for policy, development and resource allocation decisions that are complementary to the primary purpose
- carries out conservation and restoration programs and works
- informs, educates and involves the community
- undertakes and supports research and monitoring

The Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology is one of Australia's largest collections of human tissue specimens, comparative anatomy specimens and historical anatomical models, offering students and researchers a unique insight into the human body. Although the museum is not normally open to the public, tours of the museum are available for health professionals and medical students.
